Weekly Meetings

All members of the CREU team, along with Dr. Lee, meet once a week on Thursdays for an hour and discuss research, present information, ask questions, discuss progress and set future goals for the project. All meeting times, and everything accomplished in each meeting, is recorded on this page.

Present to meeting: Dr. Lee, Norris, White, Greene, Khamphavong

10/7/10
2:00pm Davis
Catherine Greene and Chloe Norris presented via Power Point facts about Wireless Sensor Networks and different operating systems used for WSNs. Dr. Lee reviewed material gone over during presentation, then discussed and explained many relevant topics relating to the presentation. Some of the topics she discussed included data transmission via one-hop vs. multi-hop, paths and routing algorithms, sensor energy levels, complexity levels of certain sensors, memory size of sensors, computational capacity of sensors, and many other topics. Time was also given for questions and answers. At the end of the meeting, each member was either assigned an operating system or a language used in an operating system and was assigned to write a summary on the given topic.
Present to meeting: Dr. Lee, Norris, White, Greene, Khamphavong

10/14/10
2:00pm Davis
The meeting began with Bretny Khamphavong and Nancy White giving a presentation about TinyOS. Afterwards, summaries about Contiki OS, the NesC language, Mantis, and Lite OS were presented and discussed. After going over the summaries, Dr. Lee explained to the group the concept of race conditions within certain systems. The group was given the assignment of putting together a PowerPoint with all of the reviewed operating systems on it, and to come up with an interesting application we could incorporate witricity within WSNs.
Present to meeting: Dr. Lee, Norris, White, Greene, Khamphavong

10/21/10
2:00pm Davis.
The meeting began when the entire group gave a combined presentation of different types of operating systems that are typically used within WSNs, and the programming language nesC. Dr. Lee discussed many aspects to consider before choosing an operating system for a WSN; such as what type of sensor is involved, and it's energy source. The group discussed their ideas about interesting ways of incorporating Witricity within WSNs.
Present to meeting: Dr. Lee, Norris, White, Greene, Khamphavong

10/28/10
2:00pm Davis.
During this meeting, the group, along with Dr. Lee, finished downloading Moteview (the software used for wireless sensors). We started to get the feel of using the software, and each group member was assigned to read and summarize parts of the Moteview manual to better understand the software before we use it within our research. We also discussed which programming language we should use within the programming components of our research. We all came to agree on NesC, for the reason that NesC is used within many different WSNs, and it would probably be the most effective language for one who is new to programming within WSNs.
Present to meeting: Dr. Lee, Norris, White, Greene, Khamphavong

11/04/10
2:00pm Davis.
During this meeting, the group gave a combined presentation of the MoteView users manual. Many questions were addressed and answered. Each group member also turned in a written summary to Dr. Lee on their part of the presentation. After the presentation, each group member was given a section of the MoteWorks guide to summarize and give a presentation on for the next meeting.
Present to meeting: Dr. Lee, Norris, White, Greene, Khamphavong

11/11/10
2:00pm Davis.
The Group gave the combined presentation of the MoteWorks guide. The group then discussed the CUR - Posters on the Hill application. We also set an additional goal: To develop a simulation test bed for wireless electricity charging within a wireless sensor network. We concluded the meeting by planning what we were going to put on the CUR application, and discussing what will be done over Thanksgiving break
Present to meeting: Dr. Lee, Norris, White, Greene, Khamphavong

12/02/10
2:00pm Davis.
The Group gave a presentation to a Radford University journalist about the project milestones, project information, and answered questions. Photographs of the group were also taken to post in potential school articles. The first stipend was given to the group members.
Present to meeting: Dr. Lee, Norris, White, Greene, Khamphavong

12/09/10
2:00pm Davis.
The Group was able to find a computer lab on campus in which they could download the software needed for sensors and the WSN. Each member was given a key to the computer lab. The group discussed what would be done over break, when our next meeting would be, and when the next stipends would be received. Dr. Lee treated the whole team to Starbucks as a reward for the hard work put into the semester!
Present to meeting: Dr. Lee, Norris, White, Greene, Khamphavong

Next meeting: After Break

Second semester official meeting information: Mondays 6:00pm Davis.

01/31/11
6:00pm Davis.
The group reunited and had the first official meeting of the semester. The group discussed downloading the software needed for sensors. The group also talked about the Tapia Conference in San Francisco, and who all was interested in attending.
