The patterns of human civilization

The image below shows Iowa as seen from space.
The grid pattern is due to the roads that crisscross the state, with the intersections being towns or cities.
Just south of the geographic center of the state is Des Moines, at the intersection of I-80 (east-west) and I-35 (north/south).
