Satellites: NOAA-15, NOAA 16, NOAA 17 and NOAA-18, part of NOAA's 850km-high (530 mile-high) Polar Orbiting satellites
The view up and down the eastern part of North America
The image below was acquired by the
newly-operational NOAA 18 satellite.
It shows an amazing view of the eastern part of the continent from Hudson Bay in
Canada all the way down to Cuba, Haiti/Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
Note the ice on Hudson Bay is well into breaking up. This should not
be happening yet at this time of year.
Details of the ice can be seen on the larger image (click on the one below).
There is a huge swatch of clear weather over the mid-Atlantic and south-central
US. This led to incredibly blue skies and clear weather.
Unfortunately, the shorp line of clouds north of this clear area delineated the
areas of the US hit by severe winter weather, with huge amounts of snow in the
northeast and upper midwest.
