Earlier today:
Ivan is stalling on land, and dropping a great deal of the moisture accumulated from his time of formation.
Over land, hurricanes cool and can no longer draw thermal energy from the warmer ocean below.
Cooler air can not hold as much moisture as warmer air, and the moisture falls out as (torrents of) rain.
