Virginia’s Adopt-A-Stream Program

The Virginia Adopt-A-Stream Program was initiated under the Appropriation Act signed by Governor Jim Gilmore in April 1998. The purpose of the Adopt-A-Stream Program is to encourage citizen-based stewardship of the Commonwealth’s water resources, while reducing the amount of litter entering Virginia’s waters, promoting education and outreach, and facilitating community capacity building. The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has been charged to implement the Adopt-A-Stream Program. DCR is dedicated to working with citizens to cleanup Virginia’s waterways.
