System 7.5 through 7.5.5

Note: This version of the setup might work with less than 7.5, it might work with 7.1. But this has not been tested.

The setup of PPP on the Mac is a 3 step process before you can dial and get everything going. Below are detailed instructions on how to go about setting up PPP.

Step 1: Installing Disks

When you put in "Disk 1" the computer comes up with this screen, simply Double Click on the icon. It will self-extract all the files across the 6 disks and place them on the hard drive.

If this does not come up, just double click on the disk "RU MacPPP 1" and the window will then come up. Follow the above directions.

Next you will be prompted about the installation of the software, simply click on "Continue".

Select where you want the program to install the files for the RU Network. We suggest making it simple and installing the archive onto the desktop.

Here is a screen capture on how the disks install. There are a total of 6 disks for RU MacPPP. In this section you will be switching those disks around to install all of the files from the disk to your hard drive. After this step is completed, you will no longer need the disks for installation.

Once the process has completed, you will be prompted that installation was sucessfull. Once this has finished, you have completed step 1 of the install process.

Step 2: Install Open Transport

To install OpenTransport, double click on the "RU Network folder". Click on the arrow for "PPP Setup", then click on the arrow for "OT 1.1.1-Net Install". Locate Installer as indicated on this picture, and double click on it. This will glide you through the installation process of OpenTransport.

Labeled on the left shows where the Installer program is located. To start this, just double-click on it.

This information screen tells you a little about OpenTransport for the Mac. Simply click on "Continue" to begin the installation.

This is the main menu of the installation of OpenTransport. You have several options relating to the installation process. For most systems, simply click on "Install".

Once the install is completed, restart your computer. OpenTransport will load automatically.

Step 3: Install PPP

Locate the "Install FreePPP 2.5.rf" icon in the FreePPP folder. To continue with the installation of FreePPP, double-click on this icon. Then proceed to the next step.

This is just the install screen, simply click on the Install button to continue.

This is just to select where you want to install the FreePPP software. We suggest clicking on the "Install" button. For the more advanced user, you can select which options you would like installed.

Now that the installation of the software is complete, click on "Configure". This will then prompt you into the next step.

Click on "restart".

Completing the Install

Notice now, on the top right of your macintosh you have the left icon, the one that looks like the phone. This is your FreePPP icon. This is where you connect, disconnect, and setup your PPP connection.

Go to that icon and click on it. Pulldown and release on "Configure FreePPP". This will put you into the next step.

There is a blue arrow on the bottom left, click on it. (On this screen it is on the middle left.)

Click on "Open TCP/IP" and you get this menu. Type in the setings exactly as you see them on this screen and then click on the "close box".

You then will be prompted to save. Please do so.

Now click on the "Accounts" tab so you can specify your username and password used for dialing and connecting.

Now just type these settings in exactly as they are shown here. Substitute your username and password for the username and password of your email account.

Now you have sucessfully setup PPP on the Macintosh. Everything should be good to go. You, after establishing a connection, can use Netscape, Telnet, etc..
