Message from the ESHE Department Chair

Welcome to the Department of Exercise, Sport, and Health Education!

We prepare students to be leaders in the field of physical activity and health.  Supported by mounting evidence, we maintain that nothing is more important to a person than lifelong good health, and that physical activity, in its many forms, is an individual’s best health insurance.

We take our responsibility seriously.  We offer dedicated faculty and contemporary programs that prepare students to lead school-based, community, and clinical programs in exercise, physical activity, rehabilitation, and sport settings.  Many of our programs possess markers of quality.  For example, the Physical and Health Education (Teaching) program is accredited by its professional association (NASPE/NCATE), and our Athletic Training Education Program has received program candidacy status from its accrediting arm (JRC-AT).  ESHE academic programs are responsive to the needs of today’s students.  For example, our Sport and Wellness Leadership programs provide multidisciplinary study for leadership and administrative positions in the growing sport and fitness industries.  We provide students with valuable opportunities to bridge knowledge and practice, with a wide variety of field experiences to help transition students into careers.  ESHE also offers attractive minors to RU students to supplement their own programs, such as self-defense and coaching education.

We do more than deliver quality academic programs.  Several departmental activities engage our students in pre-professional experiences.  For example, ESHE students and faculty collaborate to provide children’s activity and youth sport programs for the community, a variety of workshops leading to professional certifications, RU faculty-staff programs such as fitness/wellness and self-defense, and collaborative field-based research projects.  These experiences strengthen the educational experience and allow faculty, students, and community to work as partners.

As faculty in the Department of Exercise, Sport, and Health Education, we pay attention to our motto…Building Physically Active and Healthy Lifestyles…One Person at a Time.  Our impact is felt through the preparation of each person - the ESHE student-leader.  We hope the ESHE student will find value in our programs and an exciting and rewarding career in our dynamic field.

Please do not hesitate to contact the department or me (e-mail bzeakes@radford.edu) for further information.
