MUSC 477 Music in Therapy 


STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:

The purpose of this course is to prepare the student music therapist for entry into the professional arena. Along with experiences in other classes, the student therapist will be expected to integrate a variety of information into a working model of music as therapy. The student will be expected to integrate general concepts of music therapy and specific psychotherapy techniques into a working model of music as therapy and present this material to the class in a lecture/didactic format in a clear and concise manner. A significant percentage of the class time will involve oral presentation of materials that are original and creative. The student will be expected to present this material periodically throughout the semester in an efficient and understandable manner.

Issues addressed in class will include, but are not limited to:

schools of thought in psychotherapy
behavioral techniques and music therapy
preparation for internships
the certification exam
personal growth

GRADING:

Grades will be based on the following criteria;

semester projects (see projects handouts)
examinations (on an as needed basis)
attendance/participation
book reports
