MUSC 336 The Influence of Music on Behavior

Syllabus

Assignments Defined:

Self-Report: This is an opportunity for you to talk about yourself, or some aspect of yourself… and to reflect on where you are in the educational process at Radford University. This is particularly relevant as it relates to becoming a professional music therapist. What do you want me to know about you? What is important for me to know about you? …all in the spirit of self-understanding…

Topic Papers: These papers are essentially the same as in previous classes. APA format, 3 references, title page etc… You are encouraged to make use of more diverse journals in this class. In other words, include in your references something like periodicals from the psychology field… nursing perhaps… maybe social work… it could even be exercise… but don't forget to include at least one music therapy periodical!

Observations/Analyses of Musical Events: This is a wonderful opportunity to begin observing the world of music from a new perspective. Rather than being a participant of a musical event, notice how a musical event might actually be "influencing behavior" of those around you. These events might include things like festivals, passive music found in malls or stores, exercise classes, and so on…. (avoid things like church, concerts etc… too predictable). A good guide for reflecting on these influences includes the 5 domains of human functioning (social, physical/physio, emotional, cognitive and spiritual).

Mid-term and Final Exams: Both of these exams will be essay. This means that you will need to bring a "blue book" to the exam. Actually, I recommend that you bring two for each exam. The final exam is not cumulative so you can forget the first half of the semester and still do OK on the final!! Each exam will easily required the fully allotted time to complete.

Attendance/Participation: If I have learned anything over the years of teaching it is this: YOU LEARN A LOT MORE IF YOU GO TO CLASS!!! Since much of the class is centered on your opinions about the material presented, significant learning occurs simply by you being present. Be there… and speak up…
