Senior finance major Greg Murphy loves RU and isn’t afraid to tell you why. As a student, he has been involved in the 2004-2005 rugby team, intramural sports and the Student Managed Investment Portfolio Organization (SMIPO). “SMIPO and rugby are two totally different types of organizations. But being involved in both organizations has taught me how to manage my time as efficiently as possible, since both are highly demanding,” says Murphy.
He says SMIPO has immersed him in the world of finance and investment, “mainly the inner workings of company stock valuations as well as a better understanding about how the markets work,” says Murphy. After graduation in spring 2009, he hopes to be employed in the finance sector. “I strive to be very successful at anything I do and to never give up in any aspect of my life. These are my goals,” he says.
Since spring 2007, Murphy has participated in RU’s telephone outreach program housed in the Radford University Foundation. He has called up to 100 RU alumni and friends a day to ask for their support of RU. “I have enjoyed being able to contact many individuals associated with Radford who have provided insight into how Radford used to be and who have shared their stories of success,” says Murphy. He says that through conversations with RU alumni, he has gained valuable new perspectives about his school while networking along the way. “They have given me great advice over the phone regarding how to go about succeeding in different areas of study and life in general,” he says.
In all, Murphy has helped raise more than $25,000 for RU through the telephone outreach program. He says it is easy to connect with others who love RU. “Nothing compares to Radford. I love where I am, who I know and how close and tight knit we are,” says Murphy.
