The mission of the Master of Science in Athletic Training Program at Radford University is to provide an ethical, inclusive educational environment to develop diverse, effective agents of change prepared to become athletic trainers who engage in lifelong, professional, and continuing educational activities complying with the Board of Certification Practice Standards and Code of Professional Responsibility with intentions to facilitate the growth of the athletic training profession in Radford, the surrounding communities, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

About our Program

The purpose of the Athletic Training graduate program at Radford University is to provide students with the opportunity to earn a graduate degree in athletic training, which will allows students to sit for the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainer’s (BOC) examination. Athletic trainers are recognized by the American Medical Association as allied health care professionals, and they are involved in the treatment of people of all ages. They prevent, assess, treat and provide rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries. In addition, they are often first to provide immediate care and treatment of injury. Athletic trainers work under the supervision of physicians to provide health care for clients in multiple settings including high schools, universities, hospitals, rehabilitation clinics and physician offices.  

Radford University’s athletic training program focuses on preparing students to become exceptional clinical athletic trainers in a variety of work settings.  As part of their preparation, students will complete two years of intensive clinical preparation.

Overview of the Admissions Process

Admission to most athletic training programs across the nation is competitive. Your application to Radford University's MSAT program may be more likely be successful if you have:

  • All applicants should apply through the ATCAS Application System.
  • Strong reasoning and writing skills
  • Completion of prerequisite courses by May of the year you plan to begin the program
  • Work or volunteer experiences with diverse populations of physically active population including scholastic athletes, club sports, youth sports and work with older athletes
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, preferred GPA 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in all undergraduate and/or graduate coursework
  • A demonstrated record of successful professional and interpersonal skills, as demonstrated through references and exhibited during an on-site interview

One cohort is admitted to each campus location for the Radford MSAT program each year, with a summer entry date. All applications are submitted to the College of Graduate Studies and Research and are screened for accuracy and completeness before being forwarded to the Athletic Training Program Admissions Committee for a comprehensive review. Before beginning your application to the MSAT program, review this important information for prospective students.

MSAT Admissions Timeline

Applications are now being accepted for the 2024-2025 MSAT cohort. The MSAT Program has a rolling admissions and will continue to accept applications and interview until our cohort is full.  Final candidates in the admissions process will be invited to participate in an interview with the MSAT Interview Panel. Depending on COVID-19 restrictions, this interview may be conducted virtually.  NOTE: If there continues to be space available after the November 15 deadline, we will continue to accept applicants until the program is full.
