hw01
intro: arithmetic and printing

Due Jan.2928 (Wed) in class1. (N.B. In the future homeworks will be due on Mondays.)

See the main homework page for hw guidelines (your name and assignment# on each paper, etc.).

Note: In the book's numbering system, a leading ‘R’ means review exercises; a leading ‘P’ means programming exercises.
For programming exercises, you are expected to actually turn in a copy of your program2.

  1. (3pts) R1.12
  2. (2pts) R2.2.
(Noted Jan.26 (Mon) 23:40: This question asks about concepts from the reading which we haven't used/explored in any programs yet; grading will be lenient because of this.)
  3. (2pts) R2.4
3ed, clarify R2.4: “...and for declaring a variable which could hold a Rectangle object”
2ed, clarify R2.4: “...code for constructing an object of class Rectangle, and for declaring a variable which holds a Rectangle
Note: Since we have not yet talked about constructing objects, you only need to answer the second half: declaring a variable of type Rectangle. (However, if you have sneaked a peak at §2.6, feel free to answer the first part as well, for an extra 2pts!)
  4. (3pts) P1.5

1 I will accept it on Thursday as well, since the day-of-week didn't originally agree with the date. I encourage you to turn it in Wednesday, though.

2Although R1.12 asks you to write a program to check your answer, you don't actually need to turn in that program.
