Content as PDFs and/or Word Documents

As you may have read, Radford University has created a mobile-friendly version of the website. All of the content currently housed within the university's content management system is now mobile-optimized, allowing users with smartphones to view pages formatted ideally for their devices.

As our website traffic increasingly comes from mobile devices (some sites see more than 20% of their traffic coming from mobile devices), we wanted to take this time to remind you of some best practices that not only make for a better web experience for desktop users, but is vitally important for mobile users.

If you are posting a PDF or Word document on your website, please consider whether this is necessary. PDFs/Word docs will not automatically optimize the way plain content will within the CMS. If you are posting a PDF/Word doc that is just text or doesn’t require special formatting, please instead post that content as text on a Content page within your site.

If you have questions about this or any other Web best practice, please contact your Web Communications liaison.
