This course examines the use of technology to support healthcare processes and clinical thinking and explores the ability of informatics and technology to positively impact patient outcomes.

2. Detailed Description of Course

This course focuses on concepts of health care informatics and its utilization in clinical practice. Essential members of the healthcare team use information and communication technologies and informatics tools in their direct and indirect care roles. This course explores the roles and responsibilities of the advanced-level health care team in health information technology.

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This online course may include but is not limited to seminar discussions (faculty and student-led), lectures, guest speakers, case studies, written assignments, projects, and other teaching-learning strategies as appropriate. Because the course is online, audio or video presentations/lectures, discussion boards, chat rooms, and other instructional technology strategies may be used.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

1. Examine the various information and communication technology tools used in the care of patients, communities, and populations.
2. Appraise information, health literacy and communication technology to gather data, create information, and generate knowledge.
3. Explore information and communication technologies and informatics processes to deliver safe nursing care to diverse populations in a variety of settings.
4. Analyze information and communication technology to support documentation of care and communication among providers, patients, and all system levels.
5. Incorporate information and communication technologies in accordance with ethical, legal, professional, and regulatory standards, and workplace policies in the delivery of care.

5. Assessment Measures

Written assignments including papers and discussion board posts, group projects, presentations, and other discretionary methods of evaluation.
