MUSC 357: Vocal Pedagogy
Prerequisites: None
Credit Hours: (2)
Two hours lecture, on hour laboratory. This course is designed for voice majors/minors and vocal/choral Music Education majors. In this course students will learn anatomical and physiological elements of the vocal mechanism related to singing through reading, research, and discussion. Pedagogical techniques for singers and future vocal teachers will be evaluated to aid students in developing a personal methodology for teaching voice and choral ensembles.

1) Posture and Alignment
2) Anatomy and Physiology
a. Respiration: Breathing mechanism, Approaches to breath management (support and Appoggio), and Teaching breathing and correcting faults.
b. Phonation: Laryngeal anatomy and Teaching phonation and correcting faults.
c. Resonance: the Nature of sound and Vocal resonance and Vowel modification and Teaching resonance and correcting faults.
d. Vocal Registration
e. Articulation
3) Voice classification: children's voice and fach for singers
4) Teaching Voice
a. Pedagogical attitudes and approaches
b. Contemporary commerical music - Belting
c. Choral pedagogy
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The objectives of the course will be accomplished through reading and listening assignments.
Course Goals and Objectives
At the conslusion of the course, students will be able to:
1) Identify and understand the anatomy and physiology of the vocal mechanism through a study of respiration, phonation, resonation, and articulation.
2) Describe singing voices with proper vocal vocabulary through listening critically.
3) Demonstrate teaching students of all ages, including children, teens with changing voices, and adults.
4) Demonstrate knowledge of voice lesson instruction, preparation, and pedagogical approaches.
Assessment Measures
Grades will be based on written exams, reading assignments, and teaching demonstrations.
