HLTH 220: First Aid-CPR-AED

This course provides participants with critical knowledge and skills to react in the first few minutes of an emergency and provide care until Emergency Medical Services arrive. This course covers CPR and AED for adults, children, and infants. It also covers First Aid topics, such as bleeding, broken bones, shock, heat and cold emergencies, personal protection, asthma care, and epinephrine auto injectors. Additional topics include 2 person CPR, pocket masks, bag valve mask, and oxygen administration. This course will allow students to earn basic and professional/health care provider certification in CPR and AED, as well as Standard First Aid for those students passing with a score of 80% or higher the ARC written and practical examinations.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Course information will be presented through a wide variety of teaching methods that may include, but are not limited to: Lecture, video, discussion, in-class activities, student demonstrations, online and in-class learning, online and in-class testing, student presentations, simulation exercises.


Goals and Objectives of the Course

1) Describe how to recognize an emergency and evaluate the scene.
2) Explain how to activate and work with emergency medical services (EMS) system.
3) Understand legal concepts including consent and the purpose of Good Samaritan laws.
4) Identify how to reduce the risk of disease transmission when giving care.
5) Explain and demonstrate how to check a person for life-threatening and non-life-threatening conditions.
6) Recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack, and describe appropraite first aid care for a person who is showing these signs and symptoms.
7) Describe and demonstrate CPR and use of an AED for a person who is in cardiac arrest.
8) Describe and demonstrate first aid care for a person who is choking.
9) Recognize the signs and symptoms of shock and describe appropraite first aid care for shock.
10) Recognize the signs and symptoms of and describe appropriate first aid care for the following sudden illnesses: Breathing emergencies, diabetic emergencies, seizures, fainting, and stroke.
11) Describe and demonstrate methods used to control external bleeding.
12) Recognize the signs and symptoms of, and describe appropriate first aid care for the following injuries: burns; muscle, bone and joint injuries; and head, neck and spinal injuries (including concussion).
13) Recognize the signs and symptoms of, and describe appropriate first aid care for the following environmental injuries and illnesses: heat-related illnesses, cold-related illnesses and poisoning.
14) List the series of events that occur when the emergency medical services (EMS) system is activated.
15) Describe and demonstrate how to perform a primary assessment.
16) Describe and demonstrate emergency moves.
17) Describe and demonstrate how to give ventilations using a resuscitation mask (adult, child and infant).
18) Demonstrate how to use a bag-valve-mask resuscitator (BVM) with two rescuers (adult, child and infant).
19) Demonstrate how to perform two rescuer CPR (adult, child and infant).
20) Decide what care to provide for breathing and cardiac emergencies.
21) Describe how to provide oxygen with a mask to a person in distress.


Assessment Measures

Assessment measures may include but are not limited to the following: Skill demonstrations, practical exams, projects, quizzes or exams (inclass and online), presentations, class activities.
