Important Update on Masking Requirements for RUC

Important Update on COVID-19 Global Health Pandemic at Radford University Message from Interim President Carolyn Ringer Lepre, Ph.D.

Dear Highlander Family:

At Radford University and RUC the health and safety of our students, faculty, staff and their families are paramount. Based upon updated guidance from the CDC and the substantial transmission rate of COVID-19 in our area, effective August 16, 2021, face masks and social distancing are required in all settings at RUC regardless of vaccine status. This includes classrooms, common spaces, dining areas unless someone is eating, or other indoor areas where multiple people can gather or engage.

As individuals on campus continue to receive the vaccine and provide documentation and as vaccination rates continue to increase overall, we will continue to monitor our progress and review any additional COVID-19 guidance to determine any changes to the duration of the masking requirement on main campus. Individuals working alone in private workspaces do not need to wear masks. Note: Radford University Carilion (RUC) will continue their current mask policy as they work and study in a healthcare setting.

All students living in residence halls or other student housing are strongly encouraged to wear face masks in hallways, lounges and common spaces, as well as when visiting another resident (room other than their own). Partially vaccinated or unvaccinated residents are expected to wear face masks while in the residence hall but not in their assigned room.

Also, on August 5, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced Executive Directive Number Eighteen, “Ensuring a Safe Work Place.” This directive indicates that all state employees and contractors must disclose their vaccine status to designated agency personnel. Details are forthcoming as to how Radford University and Radford University Carilion will implement this directive.

More information about Radford University’s COVID-19 response is available at our Campus Reopening website. As well, you may contact Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Susan Trageser, who serves as Radford University’s COVID-19 coordinator, at strageser@radford.edu or 540-831-6434.

With Highlander Pride,

Carolyn Ringer Lepre, Ph.D.
