United We Dance

Dance

Students in Radford University’s Department of Dance will perform “United We Dance” at Radford University’s Albig Studio Theater in Peters Hall on Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. The performance is open to the public and free of charge.

The dancers will also present a performance of “United We Dance” on Nov. 6 at the Juvenile Detention Center of the New River Valley.

“United We Dance” includes cultural dances from five different countries around the world.  A joyful upbeat celebratory dance, the Farandole from France is one piece presented in the performance. This traditional dance involves lively jumping and chain formations.

A Turkish belly dance that highlights the techniques of tribal Turkish dance, and a tribal dance of the West African country of Guinea, which involves traditional upbeat and fast dancing, are also part of the concert.

The Scottish Fling, which gained popularity in the nineteenth century and highlights the delicate balance and precision necessary for the intricate steps, makes an appearance as well.

Intricate choreography and decorative hand fans are the basis of the traditional Korean folk dance, which is yet another one of the pieces being featured.

The dances presented are researched and restaged, costumed, and performed by students in the Dance Production class in the Department of Dance in the School of Dance and Theatre.

Each dance has a different flavor, from slow and flowing to highly energetic, and serves to transport the spectators around the world as they watch. For information call (540) 831- 5286.
