ABOUT

My research with students involves drug discovery and may be broadly described as bioprospecting. My students have isolated and evaluated antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer agents from Streptomyces species and from the American mistletoe. Students have tested commercial fruit and berry extracts against a variety of human cancer cell lines for cytotoxic activity in culture. We have also collaborated with synthetic chemists and their students producing platinum and palladium compounds and furanones for anticancer testing. A new line of research in collaboration with Dr. Chet Bhatta will examine honey and propolis from stingless bees for anticancer activities.

I am also interested in biomathematics education, and for many years offered a team-taught course in Biomathematics at Sweet Briar College. I have co-organized a number of workshops for the Professional Enhancement Program of the Mathematical Association of America. In addition to co-authoring a text and laboratory manual published in 2008, I have also contributed chapters to several more recent texts, writing laboratory exercises and educational modules utilizing a variety of mathematical and modeling techniques which can be applied to biological questions.
