About
Amanda is a geneticist and molecular biologist. In her graduate work, Amanda used Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies) to study the temperature-sensitive effects of mutations that cause spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). At Radford, she is part of the nationwide SEA-PHAGES/SEA-GENES program funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), studying bacteriophage genetics using bioinformatics and molecular biology techniques. The grant supporting her post-doc is called “REALising Inclusive Science Excellence (REALISE),” and is also funded by HHMI. To contribute to the grant, Amanda mentors student peer role models, participates in faculty learning communities, assesses REALISE projects, and is the current Program Manager.
