RU Earns "Cool School" Designation for Green Efforts

RADFORD -- Radford University has made the honor roll of ”Cool Schools” recently published by the Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine (BRO) as one of 12 of the southeastern region's greenest colleges and universities.

According to research conducted by the magazine, RU was one of the top colleges and universities with an enrollment of greater than 7,500 that “are teaching about and creating initiatives for a better world.” RU is joined on the BRO “Cool Schools” honor roll by top-ranked Emory University, Duke, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia and the University of Georgia, among others. The BRO survey ranked RU #10 after the University of Virginia and above the University of Georgia.

“The BRO recognition is certainly reflective of the work done by RU and the commitment of RU students, faculty, and staff to recognize sustainability as a core institutional value,” said Dennis Grady, chair of the RU’s Sustainability Steering Committee and dean of the College of Graduate and Professional Studies. “Obviously, there is work yet to do to achieve elite status and the scorecard gives us a roadmap to achieve that status.”

BRO established nine criteria by which the participating universities were judged: renewable energy, energy conservation, food, alternative transportation, LEED/green building, recycling, environmental studies, green space and campus conservation, and outdoor recreation. RU scored a 29 out of a possible 45 points in the BRO scoring system, posting a top score of five in the outdoor recreation category and a four in the transportation, green building and recycling categories.

RU’s facilities management department has recently completed training that will result in the expanded use across its 61-building campus of environmentally-friendly cleaning supplies by its housekeeping staff. The university is also participating in Recyclemania 2010 with the goal of minimizing solid waste produced and maximizing its recycling.
