Women's Day at Radford University
The
RU Women's Studies Committee is pleased to present a special evening program
to celebrate
International Women's Day With Dr. Colette Harris Program

of Submission- the Muslim women of Tajikistan
7:00 pm, Wednesday, Feb. 20th, 2002 in Radford University's Student Union, Heth Lounge B In
light of September 11 and the subsequent spotlight on Afghanistan, the
relationship between Islam and women's rights has achieved notoriety,
particularly concerning the wearing of the veil. This talk will address
the issue of women's place in Islam with special reference to the women
of Tajikistan over the last hundred years.
Dr. Harris's research interests encompass reproductive health, in particular sexuality and violence issues, gender relations and community-participative development. Harris has published in these areas and is currently completing a book entitled, Control and Subversion: Gender, Islam, and Socialism in Tajikistan, to be published at the end of 2002. Following
this presentation will be a 30-minute panel of international Islamic women
who will respond from their varied cultural perspectives to issues raised
by Dr. Harris.
