Symbols of Submission- the Muslim women of Tajikistan

7:00 pm, Wednesday, Feb. 20th, 2002 in Radford University's Student Union,
Heth Lounge B

In light of September 11 and the subsequent spotlight on Afghanistan, the relationship between Islam and women's rights has achieved notoriety, particularly concerning the wearing of the veil. This talk will address the issue of women's place in Islam with special reference to the women of Tajikistan over the last hundred years.

Dr. Harris's research interests encompass reproductive health, in particular sexuality and violence issues, gender relations and community-participative development. Harris has published in these areas and is currently completing a book entitled, Control and Subversion: Gender, Islam, and Socialism in Tajikistan, to be published at the end of 2002.

Following this presentation will be a 30-minute panel of international Islamic women who will respond from their varied cultural perspectives to issues raised by Dr. Harris.

Sponsored by Radford University's Women's Studies Program, RU's International Education Center, The McGlothlin Family Endowment, the Office of Multicultural & International Student Affairs and the Center for Gender Studies . For more information, contact (540) 831-6143 or wstudies@radford.edu
