Dr. Baker

Professor Baker formerly taught one section of WMST 101, and is the recently appointed director of the program. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the College of St. Rose in Albany, New York. She received her MA and PhD at the University of Notre Dame, specializing in Renaissance Literature. From 1982 to 1986, she was adjunct assistant professor of English at the University of Notre Dame. Her publications include "At Home in the Contra War" for Notre Dame Magazine and Congressional Record, "The Uncanny Stranger on Display: The Female Body in Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century Love Poetry" for South Atlantic Review, and "Mentoring As Teaching And Learning" for ERIC. Her teaching interests include Renaissance cultural studies, feminist theory, women's literature, critical theory, and international women's issues. E-mail address: mpbaker@runet.edu

HILARY LIPS is a Professor Psychology, Chair of the Psychology Department, and Director of the Center for Gender Studies. For many years her research has focused on the intersections of gender, power, self-perceptions, and achievement. She is also studying the gender pay gap.

Dr. Mary Atwell

Associate Professor and Chair of Criminal Justice

Dr.Atwell teaches Race and Gender Issues in Criminal Justice at both the undergraduate and sometimes graduate level. By next year, she plans to develop a course called Women, Crime, and Violence. As for research, Dr. Atwell is interested in women and the law, especially legal issues relating to domestic violence and rape. Dr. Atwell is on a sabattical leave from Fall 2001 to January 2002.

Dr. Jeff Aspelmeier

Assistant Professor of Psychology

Dr. Aspelmeier recieved his B.S. Ed. from South West Missouri State University. His M.A. and Ph.D were obtained at Kent state Univeristy. Dr. Aspelmeier currently teaches PSYC 250 (Psychology of Diversity) for the Women's Studies Program. His areas of reseach include child, adolescent, and adult attachment, romantic relationships, social cognition (e.g., mental representaions, implicit attitudes), adult exploration & curiousity, attachment and child sexual abuse. Current research includes work with graduate students on attachment, eating disorders, and body image.

Dr. Mary Ferrari

Associate Professor of History

Dr. Ferrari teaches a survey course in Women's History which concentrates only on American history. This course will be offered in Spring 2001. Her current research is on Women artisans in Charleston South Carolina at the time of the American Revolution. Dr. Ferrari's other teaching fields are Colonial America, Revolutionary America, Virginia History, Colonial Latin America, and Historical Methods. She was *Acting Director of Women's Studies for the 2001-2002 academic year.

Lee Smith, M.Ed., NCC
Coordinator

Office of Substance Abuse & Sexual Assault Education

Lee Smith’s position at RU includes outreach and education regarding substance abuse and sexual assault issues, providing support, advocacy, and counseling for sexual assault victims, and coordinating campus wide events such as Take Back the Night and Alcohol Awareness Week. Lee holds a BA in Psychology from James Madison University and a M.Ed. in Community Counseling from the University of Georgia. She is a National Certified Counselor, and a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of North Carolina.
