Digital Imaging - Assignments and Lessons

OUTSIDE ASSIGNMENTS -- Turn in at least six original images that you have taken this semester.

Take the best shots you can. Get close up to people and use basic compositional rules. There must be people close up or in the middle distance in A1 - A4.

A1 -- Take a digital image that tells a story about the beginning of the semester.

A2 -- Take a portrait of a friend or another student. Look for elements that can help tell the story about the person. Must be close up.

IN CLASS LESSONS -- Most of these will come from Hartman's Photoshop CS3

The book will be especially handy if you miss a class, since we won't have time to catch you up in class.

These completed assignments will be turned in by placing them on your web site which will be linked from the main class page.

LESSON ONE -- Balloons -- This is a basic run-though of Photoshop / includes inverse, rotate, magic wand, erase tool, layer manipulation, gradient tool,

You're on deadline, and somehow this is the only version of a photo that HAS to be used on the 12h x 9w magazine cover. How do you fix it?

balloon

PART I

First, pull it over to your desktop. Then

2. Rotate the photo using the menu command Image / Rotate Canvas

3. invert the color from negative to positive using the menu command Image/ Adjustments / Invert

4. Crop it with the crop tool

5. Repair the erasures on the sky with the clone tool

PART II: Now, to make it into a magazine cover, you need to replace the sky with a gradient.

1. Expand the "canvas" by making it larger at the top.

2. use the magic wand tool to erase the rest of the sky

3. Create a new layer and place it under the old layer

4. Put a sky-like gradient on the new lower layer

5. Use the text tool to provide a 72 point + Title for your ballooning magazine
