Prostitutes Are People Too

The other night, at an amazing Dalton dinner, amid conversations of theme parties, fart throwing and malt vinegar, another frequent topic came up. Gaming. Nothing new in our realm of dorkiness. Of course, we can't just stick to small talk like, "Oh, I really liked this game," or. "Yeah, the graphics are incredible." We have to get all crazy and bring up a controversial subject: the use of prostitutes in the acclaimed Grand Theft Auto series. In the game, it is encouraged that the character sleep with prostitutes, then kill them and take their money. Sure, this doesn't sound like MY idea of a good time, but freedom of speech DOES exist in this country, and I completely respect that. Yet, during the discussion, one of my friends (whom we all know and love) said, "But prostitutes aren't people!" Although this was probably and hopefully in jest, it really made me stop and think. The profession of prostitution has been looked at as the slime on the garbage bin of the universe, but prostitutes are people too!

I am not endorsing prostitution. I am not looking at this subject blindfolded, and I realize that all parties involved AND their families can be hurt, and in many different ways. Prostitution has the potential to damage the household structure, spread disease and cause people to end up in jail. Trust me, I am not denying that it can be bad for society. Religions in general traditionally don't approve either; this I know, but I want to leave that out of the argument altogether and stick to more of a humanitarian approach.

Prostitutes have an illegal career, but, hey, so do moonshiners. Both perform services to our society that can have very painful repercussions for their customers. Yet I still have not seen a video game that portrays a Yankee heading down south to kill him a bootlegger or two and then steal his white lightning. Alcoholism can break apart a family just as fast as extra-marital affairs, so why all the hate towards sex workers?

Americans, for the most part, assume that prostitutes are immoral people. On average, women are driven to this profession by a severe lack of money and/or education. Clearly, through such movies as Pretty Woman and Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, we can see that prostitutes are good, decent people. Even the tag line for Pretty Woman describes Vivian, Julia Robert's character as, "the prostitute with a heart of gold." Granted, Monster, about an actual prostitute, is a step back from the sympathetic perspective, but Aileen Wuornos was the only one of her kind, right? Right?

But honestly, prostitutes are just trying to find their way in this crazy world we live in -- a way which is within their own moral boundaries. How many little girls grow up wanting to sell their bodies to the highest bidder and typically be psychologically and physically abused by a pimp? This is a very real and sad situation that most of us are fortunate enough not to have to deal with, but the reality is that many people in this world do. As a society, we should realize that there are some idiots in the world -- idiots that are actually inspired to make videogames a reality in an unacceptable way. There have been several instances where minors have blamed true-life car thefts on Grand Theft Auto. In 2003, William and Josh Buckner said they shot other teens because the video game had encouraged them to. We need to recognize that the games we are playing are just that, but that they do reflect how the public perceives and respects sex workers. I'm not saying to stop playing the game or to ban it; I am merely showing that this game illustrates that Americans don't consider prostitutes to have feelings. We all have to work for a living.

so, as a Christian and a conservative (wow...can you handle it??) I have to say that you approached this subject with tact. I understand that you are not promoting nor discouraging these girls/women. You are writing this to say (as is stated in the title) that these women even if they do not have a life style that is "appropriate" or "dignified" and even "sinful" that they are people and human beings. With out condemning nor condoning this, you are simply stating that these women need not be looked at like scum or trash but rather as people that have had to succumb to a lifestyle that they themselves would rather avoid. Very well written. Less than three.

I really like the point you are making here. People should really stop and think about where others are coming from. You can't say anything generalized about those who make choices like this to make a living if you don't know their personal story. Way to stand up and make a point!

Leave it up to a woman (from Radford University nonetheless)to say slutting around is acceptable. These people are at the bottom of the pile with heroin junkies and crackheads, which is probably why they are prostitutes in the first place.

Jesus loves prostitutes too. However, He would really like them to turn away from prostitution as it is considered sexually immoral according to the Bible.
so....

so if you rape a prostitute, can you get charged with shoplifting?

Icon, if it weren't for prostitution, you'd have never been born.
I see your point ...

However, Pretty Woman and Deuce Bigalow aren't real. Neither is Grand Theft Auto.

Icon-your view on this article and apparently Radford girls is way off. I can name more girls on this campus who aren't sluts than those who are. People like you are the ones who keep giving this school a bad name. You obviously are a male chauvinist pig who doesn't know shit about women. This explains probably why you've never been laid.

I bet you can't go one Whim issue without saying anying religious in nature. I bet you can't look at every article, every toon, every item on the events calendar and refrain from responding, in some sort of comment on this site, with *something* from your religious beliefs.

Is there anything Family Guy isnt relavent to?

...but I'll tell you what's not cool--killing strippers. Strippers are people too; naked people who may be willing to pleasure you for a price you negotiate later behind the curtain of a VIP room. Besides, there's no reason to kill them, 'cause most of them are already dead inside...Good night, folks!

And there are sluts at all schools. I've been to way more theme parties that encourage girls to take their clothes off (such as naked slip and slides, lingerie parties, etc.) at Tech than I have at Radford. However, I have also known my share of sorostitues here. But whenever any talks trash about our school, remember, JMU has more STD's than we do. And with your help, we can get those numbers back!

Icon, next time you try to make a point you may want to know what you're talking about first...or at the very least TRY to sound intelligent...

Great article, Brice!

Somehow, I think prostitutes have far more problems than how they are portrayed by GTA and Hollywood. You know, little things like HIV and Hep-C...not to mention the odd crack or meth addiction...

Prostitutes don't need respect as much as they need rehab or other treatment to help them get out of the life...

Elmira needs to learn how to properly bash someone. That was pathetic. An orangutan with no brain could have done better. Worst comment ever.

I liked this article... It was balanced... As for the comments that followed... not so ballanced... However the joke about Shop lifting... Priceless!

My point is that prostitutes make themselves look bad enough, and every outlet of the media only helps make them look worse, not just video games, so I don't see the point. Oh, and trust me, Icon is not born from a prostitute and Icon can get any woman on the campus that Icon wants.
