Welcome to the interview section of Whim Sports. In this article you will have a chance to get to know one of the many talented athletes that play for Radford.
This week's interview features Radford soccer's Jonathan Smith. The junior defender/forward from Virginia Beach, Va. has been very impressive on the field over the past few years. When asked, "Don't you play defense?" His response was, "Yeah, well, actually I kind of play forward now." This is because of his speed and talent.
As a freshman Smith played in 13 games, scoring one goal on seven shots, tallying three points. Last year Smith started 11 out of 16 games (played in all 16), scoring two goals on seven shots and tallying four points in all. This year, Smith has started five out of seven games played. He has yet to score but has taken three shots on goal. Look for Jonathan to increase his stats as the Highs continue their season.
Now without further ado, I asked the questions, he answered them:
1. Why do you enjoy playing soccer?
I like playing soccer because it is non-stop. You're out there on the field going hard for 90 minutes without any timeouts. It's fast-paced, but most of all, it's competitive.
2. What made you want to come play for Radford?
I think the campus was the reason I wanted to come to Radford. It was also the only Division I school that was the size I was looking for. The recruits that I met while touring the campus were very nice as well.
3. If you could improve anything about yourself, the team, or the school, what would it be?
I think it would be great if we had a larger attendance at our games. We play better when we have a larger crowd cheering us on. So more school spirit.
4. Who is your favorite athlete?
5. What is your major?
6. What would you like to do after college?
I thought about owning my own business, but then again, I really don't know what I want to do yet. I guess I would just like to have an enjoyable job.
7. What is your favorite food?
8. Who do you look up to the most?
I would say my father because of the adversity that he has had to overcome. Also because he makes good decisions.
10. What highschool did you attend?
Thank you to Jonathan for taking the time to do this interview. Highlander soccer is back in action this Saturday (Oct. 1) against conference rival VMI. Be sure to check out next week's edition for an all new interview.
