2005 brought to us the box-office hits, misses and the not even close. There are a couple of movies that took the bank this year, and then there are some that just didn't. In this article, I'll outline the formula for success and some of the things that made movies this year not so successful.

2005 was definitely the year of the remakes. We saw such remakes as War of the Worlds, Bewitched, Dukes of Hazard, Herbie: Fully Loaded and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. With the exception of Dukes and Herbie, the remakes were largely successful in the box-office. Movie-goers enjoy seeing remakes if they are good, and these movies certainly had their good parts. The effects were better than the originals and stories were relatively close so that there wasn't anything entirely damaging to the franchises. However, this trend probably won't last much longer since it looks as though Hollywood is getting tired of remakes.

This was definitely not the year for horror movies. Amityville Horror, White Noise, Ring Two, Boogeyman, Skeleton Key and Hide and Seek just weren't that good. Horror movies have a certain formula that makes them good. In this case, there wasn't anything particularly remarkable this year. Some of these horror movies were remakes as well. The point is, if it isn't scary enough the first time around or if it just isn't something that hasn't been done before, people will get tired quickly, as was the case this year.

By contrast, comic books and science fiction have been kicking butt and taking names. Star Wars Episode III, Sin City, Fantastic Four, Constantine and Batman Begins all have done well. In fact, they have been huge hits. Comics are still in, and Marvel and DC are capitalizing all they can. Star Wars was a smash and the number one box-office hit of 2005 to date. The people that are buying tickets are loving these and that will probably continue on through 2006.

Comedies have made a come back. Such hits as Madagascar, The Longest Yard (another remake), Robots, The 40-Year Old Virgin, Monster-In-Law and Wedding Crashers have rocked the boat. Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, Steve Carell and Robin Williams, to name a few, have all stolen the show with their performances. People love funny, and all of these movies were funny this year. 2005 has had some amazing comedies that have kept people talking.

So what's up for 2006? We have comic movies coming out, horror, thrillers, comedies and more remakes. 2006 will be an interesting time, but just remember how good 2005 was and let's see if it can be topped. Will there be a return of the horror? Only time will tell.

I'm with Zoe; potty humor only takes you so far.
Not too bad a year, all in all

I don't know if I'm the only one but I thought Star Wars III was the best of them all...and writer, let's not forget dramas this year...I thought the two airline dramas (kinda like when Armageddon and Deep Impact came out around the same time) - Flightplan and Red Eye were very good. Plus if I recall, Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson's King Kong (another remake) has been getting good reviews so far and is coming out soon.
