College is a time for learning, fun and expanding your opportunities for the future. One way to do this is to get involved with the school and its organizations. One well-known organization on campus is the American Marketing Association.
"AMA is a professional association that is a great résumé builder because it is for students who have an interest in marketing and want to further their potential by creating networking and experience opportunities," said AMA Co-President Kate Saul. Saul was recently appointed Co-President along with Ainsilie Dalton.
Every semester, the AMA takes on a new project for the spring. Some past projects include advertising for Main Street Radford, the Humane Society and International Week.
"We do a project each semester but we haven't finalized one yet for the spring," said Saul. "Mainly, this semester, we are doing fundraising for our conference held in Orlando and doing a marketing/advertising project for the Humane Society again."
Every spring, members of the AMA take a trip to the AMA International Collegiate Conference. This year's conference is being held in Orlando, FL. from March 23-25. Nearly 1,000 students from all over the country come together to gain knowledge and experience from other students as well as professionals in the marketing field. Awards are given out to stand out chapters including the "Outstanding New or Revitalized Chapter," which RU won in 2003-2004.
RU's AMA chapter was reestablished in 2003 after having been inactive. "We measure our success this year not by what we have already done, but for our legacy for the current and future members of the chapter. Future members of the Radford University chapter will be secure knowing that they have been given the guidance and infrastructure to continue to make this organization a success," was
stated in last year's AMA annual report about the future of the organization.
"I am most excited about being able to work with Ainslie (co-president), and our great faculty advisors in order to gain experience in showing leadership and making the AMA a fun, yet productive, club," commented Saul.
The AMA has about 30-40 members and has members from all different majors because you don't have to be a Marketing major or minor to join.
In order to become a member of the AMA, you must fill out an application and pay the $55.00 in dues. $39.00 goes towards the National Chapter and the left-over $16.00 goes to RU's chapter.
For more information about the club or to join, the AMA's next meeting will be Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. in the Claytor Room of Heth Hall. You can also contact the Chapter advisors, Dr. Angela Stanton, or Dr. Robert Taylor.
