Executive Director
Power to appoint the Executive Director lies with the Student Media Committee. Whim staff may
present the Committee with a candidate and recommendation, but will not have the final say.
If someone from outside the staff applies for the position, that candidate will have an equal
chance in the eyes of the Committee. If more than one candidate applies from within the staff,
each candidate must go before the Committee during the interview process and the current
Executive Director should advise the Committee during selection.
In detail, the Executive Director:
- Oversees all aspects of production and organization
- Positively represents Whim and Student Media
- Coordinates relationships with Faculty Adviser, Assistant Director of Student Media and other publications
- Represents Whim on the Student Media Committee
- Selects editorial, design and programming staff
- Organizes and attends executive, staff and workshop meetings, and Whim and Student Media functions.
- Creates the magazine's editorial and deadline structure and accepts responsibility for meeting deadlines and updating the site on a regular, timely basis.
- Directs and delegates operation of the publication.
- Establishes direction of editorial content, along with the section editors, when appropriate, and assists the staff in implementation of these plans, making sure staff members are meeting minimum requirements and adhering to editorial policy.
- Communicates with RU Network Supervisor on a regular basis to ensure Whim stays within reasonable boundaries in regards to traffic.
- Works with the Student Media computer consultant, the Student Media Coordinator and the Student Media Committee to keep computer equipment in satisfactory condition.
- Delegates responsibility for completing the above tasks in his or her absence.
- Checks site for libel and copyright infringement.
- Maintains regular office hours.
- Checks email and manages the Whim web account.
- Updates the site's index page.
- Serves as treasurer and budgets incoming money.
- Recruits new members.
The Executive Director will be evaluated by the Student Media Committee according to the duties listed above at the end of each semester,
although the Committee may review performance at any time. The Executive Director can, in extreme circumstances, be removed from office.

Section Managers
Section Managers are crucial in the publication process. They serve as a liaison between the
Executive Director and staff. The Section Managers are responsible for all content in their
section. Section Managers are required to communicate regularly with staff members to ensure
timeliness and a positive and beneficial experience for all involved. Applicants are appointed
by the Executive Director with the consultation of the Executive Board. Section Managers are
restricted to undergraduates, rising sophomores and above.
In detail, Section Managers:
- Treat Whim as a first priority after education.
- Positively represent Whim and Student Media.
- Support the decisions of the Executive Director.
- Practice open communication with the Assistant Director of Student Media, Faculty Advisor, Executive Director, Executive Board and staff members.
- Attend, be prepared for, and participate in executive, staff and workshop meetings and Whim and Student Media functions.
- Lead by example.
- Meet all deadlines.
- Copy-edit all section content.
- Check section for libel and copyright infringement.
- Take advantage of multimedia capabilities of the site.
- Bring new ideas to the publication.
- Increase knowledge of HTML and the internet.
- Recruit new members.

Copy Editors
Copy editors are directly involved in the quality of each issue produced. Copy editor staff
should have working knowledge of the AP style as well as grammar usage. Copy editors also
assist in libel and copyright issues.
In detail, Copy Editors:

- Attend, be prepared for, and participate in executive, staff and workshop meetings and Whim and Student Media functions.
- Meet all deadlines.
- Proofread and copy edit articles prior to publication.
- Check content for libel and copyright infringement.

Graphics Team and Photographers
Graphics Team members enhance the written content as well as provide a changing look to the site. Content in the form of graphics, pictures,
movies, sound, comics, Flash, Quicktime are to be produced by deadlines determined by the Executive Director and Graphics Manager.
In detail, Graphics Team members and Photographers:
- Positively represent Whim and Student Media.
- Attend, be prepared for, and participate in executive, staff and workshop meetings and Whim and Student Media functions.
- Meet all deadlines.
- Add quality graphic art, photography and multimedia to the magazine.
- Size work according to predefined standards.
- Optimize images for web use.
- Increase knowledge of graphic and multimedia production software/hardware.
- Recruit new members.

Programmers
Programmers (if applicable) provide technical support for the interactive aspects of our site. Programming experience appreciated but not
necessary in HTML, CGI/Perl, SSI, ASP, Style Sheets, UNIX, JavaScript and Flash.
In detail, Programmers:

- Attend, be prepared for, and participate in executive, staff and workshop meetings and Whim and Student Media functions.
- Meet all deadlines.
- Assist in programming to add new, changing and interactive content to the site.
- Increase knowledge of programming languages.

Staff Writers
Staff writers are the backbone of the magazine. Staff writers are responsible for providing up-to-date, relevant and interesting content to the site.
Writers are expected to do their own investigative work and arrange for any supporting multimedia.
In detail, Staff Writers:
- Positively represent Whim and Student Media.
- Attend, be prepared for, and participate in executive, staff and workshop meetings and Whim and Student Media functions.
- Practice open communication with the Executive Director, Section Managers and other staff members.
- Meet all deadlines.
- Contribute exciting and up-to-date content to the site.
- Assist in the creation of story ideas and feature issues.
- Recruit new members.

Publicity Staff
The Publicity Staff (if applicable) plays a vital role in increasing readership and staff size. Members of the publicity staff are expected to produce
advertising, set up informational tables and events and talk with related classes about the magazine. The Publicity Staff meets once a week
(or more if deemed appropriate by the staff) to brainstorm and produce advertising strategy to present to the Executive Director, Executive Board
and/or general staff.
In detail, the Publicity Staff:
- Positively represent Whim and Student Media.
- Attend, be prepared for, and participate in executive, staff and workshop meetings and Whim and Student Media functions.
- Practice open communication with the Executive Director, Section Managers and other staff members.
- Meet all deadlines.
- Works to increase readership at Radford and in the community.
- Drafts and implements advertising for Whim.
- Interacts with the community to recruit new members/increase readership.
