2003 SIGCSE Doctoral Consortium

Submission Procedures

If you would like to participate in the 2003 SIGCSE Doctoral Consortium:

  1. Prepare a brief Research Summary describing your work.
  2. Send an email to the Consortium Coordinators indicating your interest.

Details regarding these items follow. You must submit your application on or before November 30, 2002.

 Research Summary

Prepare your Research Summary as a single HTML document with a flat structure. That is, your main content should not be separated into multiple pages. You may, however, include links to external references as appropriate. This approach simplifies the review process. Please keep the length of your research summary to no more than three printed pages, using reasonable formatting standards. Do NOT use the paper template format for regular SIGCSE papers.  Develop your paper as black text on a white background.  This will help the reviewers that choose to print your document.

The HTML title of your Research Summary should be "SIGCSE 2003 DC Application -- your name". At the top of the first page, list your name, affiliation, and title of your research. The body of your application should provide a nice overview of your research and its current status. You may choose to include the following sections:

  • Introduction
  • Theoretical background
  • Previous research in the area
  • Goals of the research
  • Current status
  • Interim conclusions
  • Open issues

Include the following REQUIRED sections at the END of your Research Summary:

  • Current stage in your program of study
  • What you hope to gain from participating in the Doctoral Consortium
  • Bibliographic references

We will post the Research Summaries of accepted applicants so that all participants can familiarize themselves with the information prior to the conference.

Submission Email

Mail your submission to Doctoral Consortium the co-coordinators at (sigcse@radford.edu). Please use the following subject line in your email: SIGCSE 2002 DC Application

Include your Research Summary (HTML format) as an attachment, or provide its URL on the web.

Include the following "cover page" information in your email message (you do not need to include all of this in your Research Summary):

  • Working title of research
  • Your full name
  • Name you preferred to be called (nickname)
  • School at which you are earning your Ph.D.
  • Department in which you are a student
  • Work affiliation (optional)
  • Preferred email address
  • Full postal address
  • Telephone number(s)
  • Fax number(s)

Activities After Acceptance

Notification of acceptance will be sent by December 15, 2002. Participants should be aware of the following activities, some of which occur before the conference:

  • DC Participants must register for the SIGCSE Technical Symposium through the regular registration process.
  • Each participant will have the opportunity to submit an updated Research Summary by January 15. All of the accepted Research Summaries will be made available via the DC web site. We encourage participants to review one another's Research Summaries before the conference and to begin communicating with one another regarding their research in the weeks before we convene at the conference.
  • We will organize an informal (and optional) get-together for dinner on the evening before the primary DC day.  The DC will NOT be paying for this dinner.
  • Food will be provided both for breakfast and lunch at the DC.
  • The Doctoral Consortium will begin promptly at 9am on February 19th and will run all day. The details of the agenda will be posted when they are available.
  • DC participants will be encouraged to participate in various ways in regular conference activities, and we will meet briefly later in the conference week for a wrap-up session to compare notes.
