What to expect from SI sessions.

Read an article about SI in Radford's online magazine, Whim!

College courses typically make heavy demands on students.  The key to success is to use study habits that can help meet those demands.

Consistent study using effective learning skills and tools works best, especially in challenging courses.  Supplemental Instruction (SI) provides students with additional opportunities to study efficiently and effectively with your classmates in a comfortable setting.

Tell me, and I forget
Show me, and I remember.
Involve me, and I understand.
~~~ Ancient Chinese Proverb
What Is SI?
SI is connected to many classes students find challenging.  It can improve a students' academic performance in these classes by offering them the following:
regular student sessions geared to the specific class;
it's open to all students in the class;
a peer Leader who has already successfully completed the course and who works closely with the professor.
study activities and strategies that work for each class and professor; and,
a chance to study with classmates in an informal, no-risk atmosphere.
Who Attends SI?
who regularly attended the sessions made an average of half a letter grade higher than those who did not attend at all.  Students who frequently attended often showed a whole letter grade or more improvement!
How Does SI Work?
Student Leaders attend the classes and labs daily and conduct student sessions geared to what is being taught in that class.  These sessions:
are scheduled at times when most students can attend;
begin during the second week of class and meet regularly throughout the semester; and,
involve students by comparing class notes, solving problems, using handouts, and taking practice tests and exams.
