Grading:

Your grade will be based on the following (subject to revision):

Mid-term lecture exams (3 @ 100 pts) = 300

Lab Practical Exam (1 @ 100 pts)= 100

Final exam (150 pts) = 150

Quizzes (approx. 7 @ 10 pts) = 70

Lab reports and exercises (approx.) = 150

Attendance:

Lecture: Your regular attendance in class is expected and highly advised. The primary cause of failure in college classes is poor attendance. If it is necessary for you to miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what was missed, from me or from a reliable classmate. Please be on time to class and do not plan to leave early.

Lab: Laboratory attendance is required. Note: Missing more than 2 labs will automatically result in a final grade reduction of one letter grade for each additional lab missed.

Make-up policy: There will be no make-up exams or quizzes.

If it is necessary for you to miss a mid-term exam for any reason your grade for the missed exam will be determined by the grade you earn on the final exam. Since the purpose of this policy is to allow for emergencies, exceptions will not made for excused absences or illness. If the final exam is missed, a grade of I (incomplete) will be given for the course grade.

To allow for a missed quiz, I will drop your lowest quiz grade.

Laboratory preparation:

I will not be using a prepared lab manual this semester, but will be writing our lab exercises as we go. Each week, I will post the lab exercise on our web site for you to read and print before our lab meets. I will also post an assignment to be done before lab. Bring both the printed lab exercise and the completed assignment with you to lab. Depending on the format of the lab exercise, I will either collect an assignment completed during lab, or assign a lab report due the following week.

Weekly quizzes:

We will have a quiz most weeks except for weeks in which we have a mid-term exam. The quiz will cover: 1) all lecture notes given since the last quiz; and 2) study questions assigned for this week. The format for the quizzes will usually be objective but may include a short essay question.

Exams:

Exam format will consist of a mix of objective (true-false, multiple choice, matching), short answer and essay questions. Bring a No. 2 pencil as the objective portion may be computer scanned.
