Business Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order on Friday, February 15, 2002 at 12:05. There were 30 members present.

President Donna Eastman welcomed everyone and introduced the officers. On behalf of James Guthrie, who was unable to attend, she encouraged everyone to submit items for the newsletter.

The President announced the winners of the Salop and Slates contests.


1st Place: "Pressing Instincts" by Julian David Bryson, University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Student of Kenneth Jacobs.

2nd Place: "Quintet for Brass" by Thomas West, University of Georgia.

Student of Roger Vogel.

Honorable Mention:

"A Piece for Solo Clarinet" by Adam C. Murphy, University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Student of Eddie Bass.


1st Place: "In Flight" by Michael S. Taylor, University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Student of Kenneth Jacobs.

2nd Place: "Hymn of Dionysus" by Vernon Sandoz, University of New Orleans.

Student of Jerry Sieg.

Minutes of the 2001 meeting were read and approved with the following corrections:

"Richard Montalto suggests that the President send letter of welcome to new members. Donna Kelly Eastman responds that the Vice President should continue to do it since the V.P. is the officer in charge of membership, and he/she receives the applications, etc."

"Nominees for offices were announced. Betty Wishart was elected Secretary, Leonard Ball reelected Treasurer." Delete "was elected" (the election was not until Fall 2001).

Old Business We still need to honor John Boda. One of his pieces will be performed at next year's conference. Discussion followed about who, if any, other founding members have not yet been honored. Mary Hellman will ask Linda Cummings to check SCL's archives at the University of Alabama for the list of founders.

Next year's meeting will be held March 6-8 at the University of Georgia (Athens).

New Business

Jerry Sieg asked if anyone is interested in hosting the 2004 meeting. Bonnie Miksch suggested the University of Richmond.

Leonard Ball distributed copies of the treasurer's report. The balance is $2,915.68. a net increase of $805.87.

The President thanked Bonnie Miksch for hosting the conference.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:30.
