The Three Steps of Drinking
ABSORBING
Once alcohol is swallowed, it is not digested like food. Instead, it is absorbed directly in to the blood stream through the tissue lining of the stomach and small intestine.
TRANSPORTING
Once alcohol is in the blood stream, it is carried to all organs of the body. In the majority of healthy people, blood circulates through the body within 90 seconds thereby allowing alcohol to effect the brain and all other organs. These effects will vary according to the individual, the amount, the situation, and the presence of food in the stomach.
CHANGING
Alcohol is a drug that must be changed into a non-harmful substance. The liver detoxifies or changes the alcohol at a rate of ¾ - 1 oz. per hour. Nothing will speed this rate up. When the alcohol consumption rate exceeds the liver’s detoxification rate, the alcohol overload continues to circulate through the bloodstream, impairing the brain centers – intoxication results.
