The major objective is to help teachers include economics in existing elementary and secondary school curricula and to provide economic education to all southwest Virginians through: Teaching, Consultation, Research, and Materials Development.
The
The Center assists classroom teachers with print and video materials, teacher
education, and informational resources. Our materials range from information
pamphlets on specific economic subject matter to elementary school worksheets
to complete K-12 curriculum programs. Resources for teaching economics through
the social studies and business curriculums as well as in english, science, and
math are available. Most importantly, we offer our knowledge and encouragement
to teachers who are looking for a starting place to incorporate economic facts
and economic reasoning into their classes.
For elementary teachers, K-3, we offer the material that introduces students to
the basics of economic life: choices and decision making, economic
organization, money, and more.
In the intermediate grades, students may take on a variety of topics and we
have videos to accompany lessons on various economic concepts, plus lots of
materials to supplement existing curriculums.
Secondary education in economics need not be limited to the economics class. We
have materials on topics ranging from historical perspectives to money
management, from union activity to the stock market, from environmental issues
to entrepreneurship, and more.
The Center has access to many other sources of materials and is happy to work
with teachers on specific projects. We offer courses regularly through
