Information on Radford University Center for Economic Education

Established

The Center for Economic Education was established at Radford University in the Summer of 1982 when Radford became affiliated with the Joint Council on Economic Education (JCEE), a non-profit, privately financed organization dedicated to improving economic education.

Major Objective

The major objective is to help teachers include economics in existing elementary and secondary school curricula and to provide economic education to all southwest Virginians through: Teaching, Consultation, Research, and Materials Development.

  • Teaching: The center will offer recertification classes and workshops with emphasis on pre- and in-service teacher training.
  • Consultation: Local schools, educational agencies and communities are encouraged to request assistance with their economics curricula, teaching strategies, and learning aids.
  • Research: The center staff will carry out research on economic education.
  • Materials Development: The center has a library with materials for both borrowing and distribution, including curriculum guides, literature and films for such diverse sources as Federal Reserve, the AFL-CIO, the American Bankers Association, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Services and Resources

The Radford Center for Economic Education offers area schools a unique resource for integrating economics into the public school curriculum, grades K-12.

The Center assists classroom teachers with print and video materials, teacher education, and informational resources. Our materials range from information pamphlets on specific economic subject matter to elementary school worksheets to complete K-12 curriculum programs. Resources for teaching economics through the social studies and business curriculums as well as in english, science, and math are available. Most importantly, we offer our knowledge and encouragement to teachers who are looking for a starting place to incorporate economic facts and economic reasoning into their classes.

For elementary teachers, K-3, we offer the material that introduces students to the basics of economic life: choices and decision making, economic organization, money, and more.

In the intermediate grades, students may take on a variety of topics and we have videos to accompany lessons on various economic concepts, plus lots of materials to supplement existing curriculums.

Secondary education in economics need not be limited to the economics class. We have materials on topics ranging from historical perspectives to money management, from union activity to the stock market, from environmental issues to entrepreneurship, and more.

The Center has access to many other sources of materials and is happy to work with teachers on specific projects. We offer courses regularly through Radford University and the Department of Economics so that teachers can continue to develop their understanding of changing economic issues. We are also happy to offer workshops at schools or particular programs and materials.
