To log on to the
NT/2000 domain from
home
- To use Microsoft file sharing from home you need a PPP connection. This
assumes you
- have already followed the university instructions for setting this up. If
you are cruising
- the web from home after connecting to RU then you are already using PPP
(point-to-point protocol).
-
- To access various public folders and other campus network resources you
will need to be an identified RADFORD domain user. To configure your computer to logon to
the RADFORD domain from a Windows 95 or 98 computer follow these instructions:
- open the network applet in control panel
- select the "client for Microsoft networks" component and click
the PROPERTIES button.
- check the "log onto windows NT/2000 domain" box and make the domain
RADFORD
- click on OK to close the properties dialogue box for the "client for
Microsoft networks" component
- select the tcp/ip component and click the properties BUTTON. If you have
multiple tcp/ip stacks make sure you are editing the Radford connection and not AOL, etc.
If you are in the Dorm and are using Ethernet you can edit the TCP/IP stack bound
to your network card.
- go to the IP address tab and make sure that "obtain ip address
automatically" is checked
- go to the WINS tab and make sure that "use DHCP for wins
resolution" is checked (in class I told you how to enter the wins addresses but it
isn't necessary if you check this option because they have set up the automatic
configuration for WINS.)
- click on ok to close the TCP/IP properties window
- if you have ipx/spx or Netbeui and don't know what you are using them for
then delete them.
- On the configuration tab of the network applet make sure that Client
for Microsoft Networks in selected as the Primary Network Login
- click ok to close the network applet
- you will be asked to reboot - do so
- If you are dialing in then after rebooting go to
start->accessories->dial up networking (on some computers this may be
start->accessories->communications->dial up networking). RIGHT click on the
connection for Radford and choose properties. On the server type tab make sure that
"log onto network" is selected.
- when your machine boots up log in using your Windows NT login or a
generic login such as user95 or user222 as the id. User is the password for the generic
ids. If you have a network card in your machine you will already see the domain name
listed. If you only have a modem you will not see the login screen with the domain name
until you dial in.
- when you start your dialup connection and you are at the "connect
to" dialogue box with the ru phone number displayed you will have to use your UNIX
email id and password.
- after you get connected, right click on the my computer icon and choose
"map network drive"
- enter the UNC for the share you are trying to connect to such as
\\vulcan\public which is the public folder on my computer.
