Directions

Directions to Radford University may be found here. A campus map is available on that site.

The meeting will be held in the joined Reed-Curie Hall, the location of the Department of Chemistry and Physics. Curie Hall is the building next to Main Street (formerly called Norwood Street) that you will first see when coming to our building. You will be able to park either in the lot right next to our building, or in the lot right across Main (Norwood) Street from our building (details to come nearer to the meeting).

Lodging

Due to the possibility of the "fall colors" coming early this year, make your reservations as soon as possible. Local hotels--listed in order of distance from Reed-Curie Hall--include:

Best Western Radford Inn (540) 639-3000; 1501 Tyler Avenue (~1.8 miles). This Best Western has a Spinnaker's Restaurant in the same building. They've agreed to a conference rate of $79 if you mention that you're with the Radford University/AAPT/Department of Physics meeting.

Comfort Inn (540) 639-4800; 1501 Tyler Avenue (adjacent to the Best Western)

Super 8 Motel (540) 731-9355; 1600 Tyler Avenue (across the street and just down Tyler Avenue from the previous two hotels)

Other accommodations are listed here. If you find that you're having trouble arranging accommodations, please email or contact Rhett Herman.

Registration

The registration cost for the meeting will be $10, payable at the meeting site. On-site registration will be from 5:00-6:30pm Friday. Registration on Saturday will start at 8:00am. All on-site registration will be in the lobby/entryway of Reed-Curie Hall, the entrance facing the main part of campus.

List of contributed papers
As usual, the talks will run about 15 minutes each. However, there will be some flexible time built in for those that run longer due to some recent submissions of talks.

The talks on Saturday will be in one of our multimedia rooms with both Mac and Windows computers. Feel free to bring electronic talks on floppy, zip and CD. If you have a laptop to plug in, there is a standard connection for that. If you have any questions, please email Rhett Herman.

Friday Workshop

Katherine Bender and Stephen Dacey
Special Projects Initiative Office--Goddard Space Flight Center

"Online with NASA's Mission"
"...to inspire the next generation of explorers...as only NASA can."

4:00-5:15pm, Reed Hall room 201

Katherine Bender and Stephen Dacey, science educators in the EOS Special Project Initiatives Office at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, will demonstrate a new online interface for science and technology teachers that links a searchable database of NASA digital resources (based on the science driving the flight projects) with a set of remote sensing resources, a webcast interface to showcase live, interactive events offering opportunities for schools to become involved, a browser page, and a feedback page set to develop into an online community for educators. Teacher tools designed by teachers to connect the classroom with NASA...the science, the people, and the engineering...to bring that environment closer to the students.

There is not registration fee for this workshop. However, in order to get a rough idea of who is coming, please email Rhett Herman if you plan to attend.

Banquet

There will be a catered meal at 6:30pm in Heth Hall, Ballroom C (2nd floor of Heth). A campus map shows that Heth is located near the center of campus. The cost will be $16 per person. There will be a choice of 3 entree's for the dinner:
  • London broil with bordeliase sauce

Beyond the Daily Weather Forecast -- NOAA Environmental Satellites

8:00pm, Reed Hall 201

It has been over forty years since the first weather satellite was launched. During the intervening four decades, the satellite instrumentation has been expanded and improved, collecting data in various portions of the electromagnetic spectrum ranging from visible light to microwave. Beyond the ubiquitous satellite picture that has become a staple of the evening weather forecast, these data are being used in a variety of terrestrial, oceanic and atmospheric applications. Most of the products of these applications are distributed over the Internet, providing a daily record of the physical world around us. We'll look at a sampling of these NOAA satellite products and how they are derived.

Planetarium Show

There will be a planetarium show following the Keynote Speaker in the Radford University Planetarium, located on the ground floor of Curie Hall. The show will be "MarsQuest", featuring our red neighbor and narrated by Patrick Stewart.
