AUDIOLOGIC REHABILITATION

COSD 422. Audiologic Rehabilitation
Three hours lecture (3).
Prerequisites: COSD 330 or enrollment in the Teacher of Hearing
Impaired certification program.
This course will include an in-depth study of sensory devices
and intervention approaches for children with hearing loss.
- Detailed Description of Content of the Course
The major topics addressed in this course are as follows:
- Characteristics of children with hearing loss and need
for early intervention;
- Family Needs and Counseling Support;
- Communication Approaches and Modalities (including oral,
manual augmentative and alternative communication techniques
and assistive technologies)
- Hearing Aid Technology, Use, Care, & Troubleshooting;
- Cochlear Implant Technology, Use, Care, & Troubleshooting;
- Assistive Listening Devices for Children;
- Educational Support for children with hearing loss;
Discussion of family needs and supports will emphasize the
need for cultural awareness and sensitivity in a diverse client
population.
- Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The course will consist of lecture, demonstration, discussion,
and student presentations.
- Goals and Objectives of the Course
The goals of this course are for students to:
- identify and describe the characteristics of children with
hearing loss;
- identify and describe family needs and supports;
- identify and describe communication options;
- identify and describe hearing aids, cochlear implants,
and assistive listening devices; and
- identify and describe educational supports for children
with hearing loss.
- Assessment Measures
Grading may be based upon in-class exams, student presentations,
short term papers, and a final examination.
