DSNM 243. Advertising and Promotion for Design
Three hours lecture (3).
Prerequisites: DSN 110 (Grade of “C” or better) and DSN 111 (Grade of “C” or better).
Exploration of advertising and promotional techniques used to create awareness or acceptance of design products or design ideas. Student cannot receive credit if previously taken DSNF 243.
- Detailed Description of Content of Course
The student will explore how graphics, symbols, and other imagery can be manipulated to create “AIDA” (attention, interest, desire, and action) for selected apparel and interior products and services. Two-dimensional and multimedia advertising formats as well as target customer/advertiser needs are also examined.
- Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Course content will be delivered through lecture and in-class exercises. Enrichment activities that embrace artistic creativity, diversity and social responsibility will be emphasized.
- Goals and Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will demonstrate:
- Knowledge of the influence of advertising and promotion on the acquisition of goods and services.
- Knowledge of the influence of advertising and promotion on the acceptance of new ideas.
- Knowledge of the elements and principles of design.
- Knowledge of creative thinking and creative problem solving.
- Knowledge of the importance of product image and positioning.
- Awareness of the cultural, geographic, and lifestyle characteristic differences and similarities in the western world.
- Awareness of the role of advertising and promotion in the field of marketing.
- Assessment Measures
Exams and assignments will be used.

This course is required for all DSNM majors. Taught once a year. Fall semester.
