TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF APPAREL DESIGN

DSNF 383. Technical Aspects of Apparel Design
One hour lecture, four hours laboratory (3).

Prerequisites: DSNF 303 (Grade of “C” or better).

Investigation of techniques used to achieve the desired silhouette, garment set and fit based on industry standards. Concepts include the impact of fabric selection, fitting device selection and pattern grading on garment set, silhouette and aesthetics.

  1. Detailed Description of Course

The student will be presented the principles and techniques of silhouette development, garment set, industry standard of fit and pattern grading. Topics include: relationship between fabric, industry standard of fit and silhouette; computer and manual pattern grading methods; industry standard of fit for stretchy and non-stretchy fabrics; design development for a spectrum of sizes and body types; and development of garment sizes from specifications.

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

During lecture, the principles and techniques of fit according to industry standards, garment set and grading will be explained. During studio, the student will experiment with silhouette development, fit devices, and the impact of pattern grading on fit. Analysis of fit and aesthetics will also be included in the studio.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will demonstrate:

  • Understanding of the inter-relationship between fabric, fit standards and design.
  • Application of grading concepts and techniques.
  • Advanced skill in garment fit based on industry standards.
  • Advanced skill in flat pattern techniques.
  • Ability to identify fit/sizing/design problem and develop a set of solutions that would be appropriate for the industry.
  • Competency in design manipulation according to fabric type.
  • Creativity in problem solving and apparel design.
  • Critical and conceptual thinking skills in apparel design as applied to silhouette, set, and fit according to industry standards.
  1. Assessment Measures

Student assessment will include solutions to fit/sizing/design problems, graded patterns and development of designs. Exercises, projects and critiques will be an integral part of the assessment for the course.
