FASHION SKETCHING

DSNF 323. Fashion Sketching
One hour lecture, four hours laboratory (3).

Prerequisites: DSNF 123 (Grade of “C” or better) and DSNF 223 (Grade of “C” or better)

Sketching of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing. Emphasis on garment details, textures and presentation formats.

  1. Detailed Description of Course

The student will explore garment sketching and presentation formats. Topics include: fashion figure drawing; croquis and technical drawing; fabric/texture identification and representation; garment details; target markets and line development; software applications for fashion sketching and presentation formats.

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Lecture/demonstration will provide an overview of fashion sketching techniques. In studio, the student will apply fashion sketching techniques to the representation of original design ideas.

  1. Goals and Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will demonstrate:

    • Basic skill in software applications for fashion sketching.
    • Knowledge of portfolio development and presentation for specific target markets.
    • Knowledge of textiles, apparel, and design principles as they relate to the creation of fashion apparel by various sketching techniques.
    • Knowledge of the use of multimedia approaches to the development and presentation of fashion apparel.
    • Knowledge of fashion apparel lines, collections, and modules developed for specific fashion target markets and seasons.
    • Basic skill in communicating fashion ideas through the use of croquis; free-hand, flat and specification (specs) drawing; and other fashion illustration techniques.

Student assessment is based on projects, critiques, and presentations.
