DESIGN BY DRAPING

DSNF 313. Design by Draping
One hour lecture, four hours laboratory (3).
Prerequisites: DSNF 254 (Grade of “C” or better).
Introduction to the principles of designing garments through draping techniques. Development of original designs on a three dimensional form.
- Detailed Description of Content of Course
The student will learn the principles, methods and techniques of garment design and manipulation by the draping techniques. Topics include: dart manipulation; added fullness to garments; contouring; two-way stretch fabrics; use of the fabric bias; design theories; and the design process.
- Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
In lecture, the principles and techniques of draping will be presented. In studio, the student will develop original design ideas using principles and techniques of draping.
- Goals and Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will demonstrate:
- Skill in the techniques and principles of draping for apparel design.
- Skill in creating a proportionate and aesthetically appealing design.
- Understanding of garment designs that lend themselves to draping techniques.
- Understanding of the relationship between fabric characteristics and garment designs.
- Understanding of the relationship between garment design and three-dimensional form.
- Ability to design original garments which are suitable for draping techniques.
- Application of design theory and the design process.
