BASIC GARMENT ASSEMBLY

DSNF 253. Basic Garment Assembly
One hours lecture, four hours laboratory (3).
Prerequisites: DSNF 123 (Grade of “C” or better).
Introduction to appropriate sewing techniques for various fabrics and construction considerations used in apparel. Identification of garment and commercial pattern specifications will be used for product evaluation.
- Detailed Description of Content of Course
The student will explore the interrelationship of construction techniques and fabric types. Basic apparel construction techniques are studied. Other topics include: garment specifications; garment components; assembly processes; pattern layout; pattern alteration; garment fit; fabric utilization; fabric grain; and home sewing versus industry production.
- Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
In lecture, the basic principles and construction techniques for apparel production will be demonstrated. During the studio, the student will apply the principles and techniques.
- Goals and Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will demonstrate:
- Recognition of appropriate construction techniques for selected fabrics and garment styles.
- Recognition of appropriate finishing techniques for selected fabrics and garment styles.
- Recognition of the assembly processes used in home versus industry production.
- Recognition of garment specifications used to evaluate product construction.
- Skill in basic garment construction.
- Assessment Measures
Student assessment in lecture will be based on tests. In studio, assessment will include product evaluation based on specifications and construction of samples / garments.
