DSNF 233. Meaning of Dress
Three hours lecture (3).

Prerequisites: DSNF133 (Grade of “C” or better), and PSCY 121 or SOCY 110

A study of the cultural, social, psychological, and physical factors which influence market segmentation in the apparel industry.

  1. Detailed Description of Content of Course

This course exposes the student to basic theories in psychology and sociology as related to human adornment and consumer behavior. Topics include: apparel and personal adornment; relationship of apparel and personal/ interpersonal behavior; economic factors related to apparel consumption; market analysis, identification, and segmentation; global and cultural influences on apparel consumption.

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Course material is presented through an illustrated lecture approach. Informal and formal writing and reading assignments are used to help students grasp the material as well as explore in depth special areas of interest.

  1. Goals and Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of the socio/psychological and economic variables which influence apparel consumption.
  • Understanding of the fashion cycle and its impact on market segmentation.
  • Ability to distinguish target markets.
  • Recognition of the variables which influence fashion trend development.
  • Recognition of the impact of prominent apparel designers on apparel adoption.
  • Ability to conceptualize the theories of adornment.
  • Skill in communicating idea in written, oral, and multi-media formats.
  • Recognition of research methods used in the study of fashion.
