DSNF 133. Introduction to the Fashion Industry
Three hours lecture (3).

An introduction to the industry segments involved in the design, production and distribution of women's, men's, children's apparel and accessories. Career opportunities in fashion will be included.

  1. Detailed Description of Content of Course

This course is to introduce the student to the many facets of the textile and apparel industries and to enable the student to develop an understanding of the various linkages and interdependencies of the sectors within the complex. Career opportunities and the skills needed to gain employment in the textile and apparel complex are also explored.

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This course is lecture oriented. However, class participation is stimulated and enhanced by student presentations and group discussions.

  1. Goals and Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will demonstrate:

  • Recognition of fashion cycle.
  • Recognition of global issues and policies which affect the apparel industry.
  • Recognition of apparel market and customer classifications.
  • Recognition of retailing methods.
  • Ability to identify trade associations, publications and organizations related to the apparel industry.
  • Ability to identify career opportunities in fashion.
  • Knowledge of the textile and apparel complex.

Student assessment is based on assignments, tests, and projects.
