PRINCIPLES OF FASHION DESIGN

DSNF 123. Principles of Fashion Design
Two hours lecture, two hours laboratory (3).

Prerequisites: DSN 111 (Grade of “C” or better).

Elements and principles of design applied to the creation, coordination, presentation and evaluation of apparel products.

  1. Detailed Description of Content of Course

Topics include: apparel product development and production (line/group, refabricate, style recognition, …); elements and principles of design applied to apparel products (to include textures, construction lines, fitting devices, closures, and other); communication through dress; apparel design for a diverse market; merchandise categories; body type/dimensions and size categories (infant, children’s, misses, women’s, men’s, …); and economic factors related to apparel product development and production.

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Lecture will be used to present design concepts as they relate to apparel. In lab, the student will apply the basic concepts in designing and evaluating apparel products.

  1. Goals and Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will demonstrate:

1. Recognition of the relationship between apparel design and a target market.

  • Ability to understand the principles of design as they relate to apparel.
  • Ability to construct Story Boards, similar to those used in the industry, to communicate design information.
  • Understanding and application of fashion/style terminology.
  • Understanding of the types and categories of apparel merchandise.
  • Application and documentation of the design process in apparel design.
  • Basic skill in communicating ideas in written, oral and multi-media formats.
  1. Assessment Measures

Student assessment in lecture is based on tests, quizzes and assignments. Assessment in laboratory is based on projects and presentations.
