DSN 110. Introduction to Design
Three hours lecture (3).
Brief description of Course: An overview of the field of design, encompassing the built environment, fashion, interiors, print, textiles, and everyday objects in the world around us.
- Detailed Description of Content of Course
This course provides a venue for the student to explore the field of design, both as a cultural phenomenon that can enrich or contaminate society, and as a profession that employs problem solving techniques to meet human needs. Through exposure to designs and designers from many different sources, cultures, and eras, the student gains familiarity with fundamental design concepts and terminology. Creative thinking and active listening skills are emphasized; issues of social and ethical responsibility are presented.
- Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Course content is explored through lecture-based learning utilizing a variety of media. Exploratory “hands-on” research and team projects reinforce lecture and required readings. Effort is made to create a climate conducive for the development of creative and conceptual thinking skills.
- Goals and Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will demonstrate:
- The ability to recognize notable designs and designers (in architecture, industrial design, fashion, textiles, interiors, and furnishings) and describe their significance within the historical context.
- Basic knowledge of the relationship between human behavior and design.
- Basic knowledge of the ethical, ecological, cultural and global issues that impact and inform design.
- Knowledge of career opportunities within the design profession.
- Knowledge of basic design evaluation and criticism techniques.
- Basic skill in communicating ideas in written and oral formats.
- Basic skill in applying active listening techniques.
- Assessment Measures
Assignments include exercises, lecture and/or reading outlines, team projects and presentations. Quizzes and exams assess knowledge gained. Written and oral communication skills and group participation comprise an integral part of the evaluation criteria for all exercises and projects.
