DNCE 305: High-Intermediate Ballet
Three credit hours(3).
Six hours technique.
Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor.
Barre and centre practice; adagio and allegro techniques progressing in difficulty. May be taken multiple times for credit.
- Detailed Description of Content of Course
1. Barre
As in all ballet classes, the sequence of the barre work remains essentially the same whether the student is a beginner or an accomplished professional, but the exercises become more complex and have varying speeds as the student advances. For a complete listing of the barre exercises, please see the course syllabus for DNCE 105.
2. Centre
a. Turns
(1) Grand ronde de jambe (on releve only)
(2) Flic-flac: to front cou de pied and to back cou de pied
(3) Flic-flac: en tournant, en dehors and en dedans
(4) Pirouettes as in DNCE 105, but double turns
(5) Pirouette arabesque en dedans (single)
(6) Pirouette attitude en dedans (single)
(7) Pirouette en dehors from 5th position
(8) Grand fouette on the floor
(9) Chaines faster, also combined with pirouette pique en dehors and en dedans
b. Jumps (small)
(1) Soubresaut
(2) Sissonne fondue
(3) Rond de jambe en l'air saute
(4) Grand pas de basque
(5) Emboite en tournant
(6) Ballotte
(7) Jete ferme
c. Beats
(1) Entrechat-quatre
(2) Entrechat-royale
(3) Entrechat-trois
(4) Entrechat-cinq
(5) Brise
(6) Jete battu
(7) Assemble battu
- Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
A professional approach in which the classical theory and technique of ballet is taught to and practiced by the student on a high intermediate level.
- Goals and Objectives of the Course
At the conclusion of the course, the student will:
1. Demonstrate technical competency leading to an advanced level of work.
2. Be able to analyze principles of dance technique verbally or in written form.
- Assessment Measures
Assessment measures may include direct observation, digital/video taping for analysis, class attendance, practical and written examinations.
