Art 491. Museum Studies
Credit Hours (3).

Prerequisite: Art 302 or permission of instructor.

Acquaints student with all aspects of museology as it relates to the exhibition: administration, curatorial responsibilities, design, education, and basic conservation techniques and practices through weekly topical lectures and a hands-on lab experience.

  1. Detailed Description of Content of Course

Museum Studies is designed to provide the student with a general picture of all aspects of museology, including administration, registration, curatorial duties, exhibition design and installation, education, and basic conservation methods through practical experience in the RU Art Museum and the Glencoe Museum in West Radford. Students will participate daily in professional activities of the Art Museum: staging of exhibitions, examination and care of the permanent collection, and education of museum visitors to help them understand the art on display.

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on experience, students will learn the basics of museum operations.

  1. Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of the course, students will have experienced the methodology and practice of museology consistent with professional standards, and they will have acquired the basic skills essential for competency in museum work. This course is a valuable experience for students seeking a career in a museum or gallery, or in arts administration.

  1. Assessment Measures

A letter grade will be based on the student’s performance and professional attitude in the completion of assigned tasks, the written papers, and attendance.
