Art 481. Advanced Graphic Design Production Techniques
Three lecture hours (3).
Prerequisites: Art 281, senior standing, or permission of instructor
The class is an advanced version of Art 281 Graphic Design Production Techniques and focuses on the professional development of the student’s portfolio, time management, software, and presentation skills. It is targeted to the motivated senior level graphic designer. The class meets on a TBA schedule, usually 5 times during the course of the semester. The student is given a list of projects in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, then must meet the deadlines for finished work, which is presented during scheduled critiques. This class will also be offered for graduate credit.
- Detailed Description of Course
The class will focus on production of advanced projects in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. The student is given a list at the beginning of the class of various graphic design projects and a deadline to meet for the completion of those projects. These projects are taken from several sources including the “Photoshop WOW!” and “Illustrator WOW!” series of books, (to be acquired by the student). Instructor designed projects may also be given. Completion of projects requires a high level of competence with the software and include professional level product illustration, maps, technical illustration, humorous illustration, as well as photo illustration, photo manipulation and correction, and photo collage. Some of the projects have predetermined content while others require a high level of student creativity. Graduate students will be asked to complete at least 4 additional projects. Ability with time management, project planning, and presentation are all emphasized. A cooperative “class community” is encouraged to help work through problems and inspire one another.
- Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The course schedule is split between Adobe Illustrator projects and Adobe Photoshop projects. The class meets on a TBA schedule. Projects, course materials, expectations, and deadlines are assigned and discussed during the first meeting. Upon completion of the projects, the students present their work during a critique. In between these two meetings are one or more progress checks during which time students compare their work as well as troubleshoot any problems. This format is followed for both the Illustrator and Photoshop sections of the course. The class does not meet in a particular room or computer lab as the students are required to work on their own, either at home or an on-campus computer lab. Students are given the class email address to send out questions or comments to the other students. Interaction between students is highly encouraged.
The student is required to professionally present their work during the critique printed and mounted, audio-visually with Power Point, and on the web with Photoshop’s Web Photo Gallery (or the software of their choice).
